Size

Forklifts can lift really heavy things as they have a counterweight on the rear of the forklift. The huge counterweight gives balance to the forklift so the equipment doesn't tip over when lifting heavy loads. Forklifts are rated according to their load capacity. A small lift truck that could raise 1800 kilograms weighs approximately 4000 kilograms, that is equivalent to two full-size pickup trucks. The largest forklifts can have up to 36,000 kilograms of lifting capacity.

Considerations

In using a forklift, there are many safety issues. Like for example, travel in reverse when driving down a ramp. You must also haul a load in reverse if the cargo interferes with vision and is bulky. Operators have to be familiar with how to safely mount the lift using the "three-point stance." This involves putting the right hand on the back of the seat, while holding the upright of the safety cage using the left hand and placing the left foot on the step. Never jump out of a forklift even in a tip over. It is really much safer to remain inside the confines of the lift. Any slip or fall on a lift truck can lead to severe injuries.

Potential

Forklifts are considered indispensable tools in many industries as they can be utilized to quickly and efficiently load and unload products and supplies safely and with little physical exertion. Pedestrian safety is a main consideration when working in public spaces. Operators should always give pedestrians the right-of-way. A forklift must never be driven on a highway or on uneven surfaces. The driver must have a seat belt firmly fastened at all times when driving.

Expert Insight

Forklifts will always be necessary pieces of machine for businesses as forklifts are an important tool in any culture which produces and consumes mass-produced products. OSHA supervises compliance standards for companies using forklifts and provides protocols for certifications and licensing. The forklift Rodeo is an entertainment event meant for operators and other personnel which involves an obstacle course and other entertaining spectacles.
