Aerial Manlift Hazards
Aerial man lifts are personnel lifts such as boom lifts, articulated boom lifts and scissor lifts which utilize an articulated boom or a series of linked, folding supports. These machines allows employees to get up high into previously inaccessible areas. In some ways, these kinds of machines have made construction a lot safer and easier, however, the overall safety that comes with the unparalleled mobility of aerial manlifts has applied a new list of hazards that can accidentally result in severe injury or even death to unaware drivers.
Falls
Falls from a man lift often occurs when workers fail to or are unable to wear a safety harness or cannot secure the harness to the lift. Falls can happen when somebody on the platform acts inappropriately and participates in an activity like climbing the guard rails to be able to gain additional height. What's more, mishaps can be caused if the operator on the ground causes the machinery to move in an unexpected motion prior to the employee being properly secured.
At times employees could fall when the base of the lift is struck inadvertently by a heavy object. In this situation, the force of the blow below becomes amplified by the lift's length, hence causing the employee to be abruptly catapulted off of the platform. Clearly this hazardous action has terrible outcome.
Tip-Overs
Boom lifts are susceptible to tipping over. Tip overs are more common in articulated boom lifts, but could occur in any type of lift. As boom lifts are able to move both vertically and horizontally, they could change the overall center of gravity of the machine. Hence, if the lift is parked on a slope of some type or over loaded, totally extending the boom when it is in the wrong position can cause the machine to tip over.
